About NoJMS

Introduction

The North Jersey Mineralogical Society (NJMS) stands as a proud Charter member, one of the original founding clubs, of the Eastern Federation of Mineralogical and Lapidary Societies. Additionally, we maintain affiliation with the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies. As a 501(c)3 Not-for-Profit educational organization, NJMS is dedicated to providing enriching educational programs not only to our members but also to the broader community. Through club meetings, visits to schools, and engagements with various organizations and groups, we strive to promote awareness and appreciation for the study of earth sciences and mineral collecting.

Our History

Established in 1945, NJMS boasts a rich history spanning over seven decades. In 2023, we celebrated our 78th Anniversary, marking a testament to our enduring commitment to our mission.

The history of NJMS is deeply rooted in the founding of the Paterson Museum in 1927, which later led to the formation of our mineralogical society in 1944. Over the years, NJMS has organized field trips, sponsored events, and contributed to the broader mineralogical community. Today, we remain steadfast in our mission to expand knowledge in geological sciences and advocate for the preservation of our natural resources. Through ongoing efforts, we strive to inspire curiosity, appreciation, and stewardship of the earth’s treasures among our members and visitors alike.

Monthly Meetings

NJMS hosts its monthly meetings at The Paterson Museum, situated in the heart of the Great Falls Historic District in Paterson, NJ. These meetings are open to the public and feature a diverse agenda, including a social hour/mineral sale, a business meeting, mineral drawings, and an informative lecture. We extend a warm invitation, especially to younger members, to attend these meetings, as they serve as an excellent starting point to begin or enhance their mineral collection and knowledge.
